Northfield
Northfield lies in the New Trier and Northfield Townships, just 25 minutes to Chicago. It’s surrounded by other North Shore communities, including Winnetka, Northbrook, Glenview, and Wilmette. Despite being bisected by Interstate 94 (Edens Expressway) and the busy Willow Road, Northfield has managed to maintain its suburban tranquility, with gorgeous trails, parks, and nature destinations found just steps away.
Northfield was first settled in 1854 by German immigrant John Happ, who moved to the area from Winnetka. He was soon followed by other farming families, and the community remained largely agricultural until the coming of the North Shore railroad in the early 1900s. When Edens Expressway was built in the 1950s, the swampland to the east of the village was dug out, forming the Skokie Lagoons.
